Street smarts versus book smarts

While watching Nikita, during an action scene, a character mentions how handy it would be to have some "RPG's" at this time.

I turn to Robin for an explanation:  RPG's?

Rocket-propelled grenades, he tells me.

Ah, ha!  I say.  The only "RPG" I know of is "role-playing game," and somehow that does not fit the context of the show.

Somewhere in life I seem to have missed out on obtaining information like this that everyone else seems to know.  How do you or they know it?!

(P.S.  If, on the other hand, you ever want a lecture on Renaissance art history or the symbolism of nature in 17th century Romantic poetry, I'm totally your girl!)

  1. I'm pretty sure it's from video games for me? I don't think I've ever NOT known it? We played some pretty rough war games in elementary school.

  2. I had no idea what an RPG was and have no regrets. You need not either. Who in their right mind really needs to refer to a rocket-propelled grenade in day to day conversation? Video game players? Ok. You were doing other things. Still are! And we wonder why so many people are numb when it comes to violence? Even William says he's been playing these violent games since he was in elementary school. Thank goodness most people can tell the difference between fantasy and reality. It's those who can't who make this world such a scary place. I will stop before this turns into a political rant against guns.
Love that you, Jonathan, and your boys are living up to your Loving name.

  3. btw, I didn't make that comment as a put-down. Some people get into video games and they know this stuff. Some don't. Everybody has different interests. I think we get into trouble when we start judging what is 'the norm.' You were just doing other things.

    1. That's a really nice addendum, Mom. Thanks for clarifying. And yes, when you put it that way, I completely agree!
